Foraging in the Volta Region
22 January 2024
Every February, before the harmattan fully relents, we drive north-east from Accra to the Volta Region. The journey takes about four hours, and for the last thirty minutes the landscape shifts entirely — the red laterite earth softens, water appears, and the air loses its dust.
We are here for vetiver. Chrysopogon zizanioides, the grass whose roots, when dried and distilled, produce one of the most complex base notes in all of perfumery.
Ghanaian vetiver is distinctive. It is earthier and smokier than the prized Haitian variety, less creamy than the Indonesian. Some perfumers consider this a limitation. We consider it a specificity — and specificity is what Fyre is built on.
